Check-ups: a calm routine for early conversations.

A routine visit is a chance to establish a baseline, ask questions, and decide what is relevant for you.

What a routine check-up usually includes

A check-up is a scheduled visit when you do not necessarily have a complaint. The clinician typically asks about your history, medicines, family background, sleep, activity, food, mood, and work. They measure blood pressure, pulse, height, and weight, and may suggest laboratory tests depending on age and risk factors.

The purpose is to notice trends early and to give you a chance to ask questions. It is not a search for problems, and many visits end with reassurance and a few suggestions. Results are most meaningful when compared with earlier ones, which is why keeping a personal record is useful.

In Indonesia, options include community health centres (puskesmas), the community-based Posbindu PTM screening posts for non-communicable conditions, private clinics, and hospitals. Those enrolled in national health insurance (JKN, managed by BPJS Kesehatan) can ask their first-level facility about covered services and referral procedures.

Preparing for the visit

  • Write down questions and symptoms, however minor, with approximate dates.
  • Bring a list of all medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, with doses.
  • Gather earlier results, vaccination cards, and any letters from other clinics.
  • Follow any fasting instructions that the clinic gives for blood tests, and drink water unless told otherwise.
  • Bring your national ID, JKN card, or insurance details if relevant.

During the visit

  1. Start with your main concern so that it is not left to the last minute.
  2. Ask for terms to be explained in plain language.
  3. Ask what the next step is, and when you should return.

Where to start in Jakarta

Community health centre

Puskesmas provide basic examinations and referrals and are the first-level facility for many JKN members. Fees are modest or covered by insurance.

Posbindu screening post

Neighbourhood posts offer simple measurements such as blood pressure, weight, and waist circumference, often at community events.

Clinic or hospital

Private clinics and hospitals offer packages and specialist consultations. Ask what each test is for and whether it is relevant, before agreeing.

A note on packages and online tests

Comprehensive screening packages can include tests that are not needed for everyone. Ask a clinician which are appropriate for your age and history, and be cautious about home test kits whose accuracy is unclear. Placid does not endorse any facility, and this guide is not a recommendation to undergo particular tests.

Check-up questions

How often should an adult man have a check-up?

Intervals vary. Many adults review their health every one to two years, with more frequent visits if there are risk factors.

What if a result is outside the reference range?

Minor variations are common. The clinician may repeat the test or ask about circumstances before drawing conclusions.

Can I ask for a second opinion?

Yes. Seeking another view is a normal part of care, and you can bring earlier results with you.
